Fármaco Shire para TDAH obtiene aprobación más amplia en EEUU

La compañía británica Shire dijo el lunes que su fármaco para la hiperactividad Intuniv fue aprobado por los reguladores estadounidenses para ser usado en combinación con un estimulante en niños y adolescentes de 6 a 17 años.

La firma indicó que la decisión convirtió a Intuniv en el primer fármaco no estimulante diario en ser aprobado para usar ya sea solo o con un estimulante para el trastorno por déficit de atención con hiperactividad (TDAH).

Según algunos estudios, el desorden afecta del 3 al 7 por ciento de los niños en edad escolar.

"Esta aprobación marca un significativo desarrollo en nuestro portafolio del TDAH, que puede ayudar a tratar los síntomas que muchos niños con TDAH pueden experimentar durante el tratamiento con estimulantes", dijo Michael Yasick, vicepresidente de la Unidad de Negocios de TDAH de Shire.

Intuniv fue lanzado en Estados Unidos en noviembre del 2009 y logró ventas por 166 millones de dólares en su primer año completo en el mercado.

El medicamento más vendido de Shire es un estimulante para la hiperactividad llamado Vyvanse, que registró ventas de 634 millones de dólares en el 2010. En tanto Adderall XR, otro estimulante que fue su fármaco más exitoso pero perdió la exclusividad en el 2009, tuvo ventas por 361 millones de dólares.

Heart-related problems: Tell your doctor if you or your child have any heart problems, heart defects, high blood pressure, or a family history of these problems. Call your doctor right away if you or your child have any new or worsening mental symptoms or problems while taking Vyvanse, especially seeing or hearing things that are not real, believing things that are not real, or are suspicious.

• Serious side effects have been reported with use of stimulant medicines such as Vyvanse, including:
  • seizures, mainly in patients with a history of seizures
  • eyesight changes or blurred vision
  • motion and verbal tics. Patients with tics or Tourette's syndrome may experience a worsening of symptoms while taking Vyvanse.
  • slowing of growth. Your child should have his or her height and weight checked often while taking Vyvanse. The doctor may stop treatment if a problem is found during these check-ups.
